Embracing Tradition and Building a Legacy
Wee Mackay’s is a beloved establishment with a rich history rooted in Scottish tradition and culinary excellence. It all began in the 1980s when Gordon and Sheena Ross opened Wee McGregor’s, a shop dedicated to bringing the authentic flavors of Scotland to South Africa. Gordon fondly called Sheena “Wee MacGregor” for her endearing qualities, and together they created a community hub where traditional Scottish delicacies were cherished.
For decades, Wee McGregor’s was the go-to place for those craving a taste of Scotland, known for its handcrafted Scotch pies, savory haggis, and other beloved Scottish dishes. However, as time passed, the shop faced challenges, and its future became uncertain.
This is where Duncan Mackay, a loyal customer and ardent fan of Wee McGregor’s, came into the picture. When he learned that his favorite place was on the verge of closing, he knew something had to be done. Duncan shared the news with his wife, Annie, who was looking for new challenges and opportunities.
Inspired by the importance of preserving Scottish heritage and supporting her husband’s passion, Annie decided to step in. She acquired the business from Gordon and Sheena and embarked on a mission to revive and transform it. Honoring the legacy of the original founders while infusing her own vision, Annie rebranded the shop as Wee Mackay’s.
Under Annie’s leadership, Wee Mackay’s has flourished, becoming a vibrant culinary destination that stays true to its roots. The name change symbolizes a new chapter while maintaining the spirit and dedication of the Ross family. Wee Mackay’s continues to offer the authentic Scottish delicacies that customers love, ensuring that the rich flavors of Scotland remain a cherished part of South Africa’s culinary landscape.
Today, Wee Mackay’s stands as a testament to resilience, tradition, and the enduring love for Scottish cuisine. Every pie, every haggis, and every dish is a celebration of Scottish culture, crafted with care and passion.
